Fatou Kijera’s journey into caregiving is deeply rooted in her Gambian upbringing, where reverence for elders is a cornerstone of cultural identity. In The Gambia, caring for aging family members is not just a duty but a heartfelt expression of gratitude and respect. This cultural ethos profoundly influenced Fatou, especially during the time she spent caring for her beloved grandmother.​

Witnessing her grandmother’s needs firsthand ignited Fatou’s passion for providing dignified, personalized care to the elderly. This experience, combined with her professional background as a caregiver and counselor with the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), where she has served for over nine years, laid the foundation for her commitment to elder care.​
